Studio Retouching
Studio Retouching
Here is a series of studio images captured by automotive photographers, Aaron Brimhall and Jeremy Cliff. Although we retouch a lot of CG renders, it was nice to get back to photography for this project. Our other team members consisted of Carmen Lam as art producer and Sean Stell as ACD. The fun thing about studio retouching is that it gives the digital artist more places to illustrate and sculpt the image up from various layers. Aaron and Jeremy give me beautiful lighting configurations to choose from for the different sides of the vehicle and planes of the studio. They nailed down some great references for the light strip that you see in most of the majors although it would need to be illustrated so that we had the freedom to reposition it as necessary.
We created shape in the vehicles by using gradients but also some subtle reflections so that the paint didn’t lose its glossy nature. We then worked to create a sense of environment by using multiple shadows and reflections on the studio ground and the walls so that the cars sit in and interact with their environments. Lastly, we made some color shifts from the Tiger Eye Pearl (orange) that the sourced car was painted to the Liquid Carbon Metallic (dark silver) that appears in the profile and pack shots.
Do you have a photographic or CG project that will need some automotive retouching? Give us a call. We will be happy to guide you through the post-production process.
