On-Location Automotive Retouching for Toyota Tacoma

The Challenge

Bridging the gap between the raw location and the final composite.
High-end automotive campaigns often suffer from a disconnect between what the photographer sees on location and what the retoucher interprets weeks later in a dark studio.

• Complex Environments: The shoot took place in the rugged terrain of Colorado (Gold King Basin, Gray Copper Gulch). Capturing the true "energy" and lighting logic of these vast landscapes required more than just standard color correction.
• Efficiency Demands: With multiple stakeholders (Agency, Client, Photographer) on set, waiting for post-production to identify missing plates or composition errors would cause costly delays.
• Realism vs. Idealism: The goal was to maximize the beauty of the Toyota Tacoma without losing the gritty realism of the off-road environment.

The Objective & Success Criteria

Maximize composition and realism in real-time.

• Visual Fidelity: Translate the "sense of wonder" and specific light qualities of the Colorado mountains directly into the final composites.
• Technical Precision: Ensure all necessary plates (backgrounds, dust, light flares) were captured perfectly on Day 1 to avoid reshoots or heavy CGI fixes later.
• Streamlined Approval: Align goals between Saatchi & Saatchi, Toyota, and Bax+Towner during the shoot to minimize revision rounds.

Bringing the Retouching Studio to the Shoot.
Instead of a traditional linear workflow, Studio KB integrated into the production crew on-site.

• Real-Time Consultation: We worked side-by-side with Bax+Towner, consulting on angles and plates in real-time. This allowed us to "see what they see," ensuring the final retouching respected the photographers' original vision.
• Firsthand Light Reference: By witnessing the scene firsthand, we could build composites that captured the actual color palette and atmospheric energy of the location, rather than guessing based on digital files.
• Immediate Problem Solving: We established a direct line of communication with the agency and client on set, aligning expectations instantly. If a composite needed a specific background plate to work, we flagged it immediately.
